Osservando Cagliari dal mare, rimane tuttavia la suggestione di entrare all’interno di una città scenografica, facile da vedere per l’immediatezza dei panorami, e molteplice nel continuo variare dei punti di vista. Il sapore africano delle palme e del giallo calcareo viene stemperato da un architettura marcatamente occidentale, proprio il connubio di caratteri così distanti, rende la città unica nella sua molteplicità.

Fondata in pieno neolitico (6000-3000 A.C.), solo molti secoli dopo Cagliari diventa un’autentica città, grazie ai dominatori fenicio-punici, che ne sfruttano la favorevole posizione geografica al centro del Mediterraneo, per renderla un trafficato porto commerciale. Dopo la Prima Guerra Punica (III secolo A. C.), Cagliari passa sotto il dominio di Roma, della quale ancora oggi conserva importanti reperti e testimonianze, come l’Anfiteatro Romano e la Villa di Tigellio. Con il diffondersi del Cristianesimo, la città entra in contatto con personalità di rilievo come Sant’Agostino, per poi iniziare una fase di declino sotto i Vandali e risollevarsi con il ritorno dell’Impero Bizantino, periodo questo caratterizzato dalla nascita dei Giudicati (IX-X secolo D.C), sorta di autonomie locali che permettono alle popolazioni dell’Isola una relativa indipendenza e autodeterminazione. Nel XIII secolo d.c., tuttavia, in concomitanza con il declino del Giudicato Cagliaritano, si insediano in città i Pisani, che fortificano la parte alta della città isolandola attraverso un sistema di bastioni e fortificazioni ancora oggi ben visibili nei quartieri di Castello, Stampace, Marina e Villanova. Nemmeno un secolo dopo però, nel 1324, è la volta degli Aragonesi i quali, unitisi più tardi alla corona Catalana, daranno vita al Governo Spagnolo, amministrazione che genererà un forte malcontento della popolazione. Solo nel 1717 con il trattato di Utrecht la situazione cambia. Dopo un inconsistente dominio austriaco, Cagliari e la Sardegna passano ai Savoia l’anno successivo, avviando un’epoca di grandi interventi urbanistici che gradualmente emancipano la città dalla condizione di città fortificata a favore di un più razionale sviluppo attraverso opere utili e di pregio. Dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale Cagliari vive una nuova vita: attorno al nucleo urbano di epoca storica comincia a nascere una nuova città che in soli 20 anni, dal 1951 al 1971, vede raddoppiare il numero delle abitazioni, attirando la popolazione delle aree circostanti e gettando così le basi della odierna area metropolitana. Oggi Cagliari appare come una città complessa, divisa tra il suo importante patrimonio storico-culturale ed il moderno, un capoluogo che tuttavia si è sviluppato negli anni in totale armonia con il territorio circostante che ne costituisce parte integrante e segno distintivo.
